When Vastu & Architecture Clash: Workarounds & Reworks

Over the years, I’ve had countless families sit across from me and say something along the lines of, “We put our heart into building this home, but something just doesn’t feel right.” They pull out their architect’s blueprints and, almost hesitantly, ask if it’s too late to bring Vastu into the picture. My answer is always gentle but clear—it’s never too late to invite balance back into a space.

Vastu for modern homes

Why These Clashes Happen

The tension often comes from the different lenses through which architects and Vastu look at a home. Architects only prioritize functionality and design, designing cramped and closed rooms and overlooking the cycle of energy flow. However, as a Vastu consultant, we focus of design, functionality, correct placement of objects like water bodies, heavy structures, provision of light sources and air in each room of a house, which ensures a smooth energy flow. That’s why I often see:

  • Entrances opening in less favorable directions
  • Bedrooms oriented in ways that disturb rest and peace
  • Kitchens sitting in the north or northeast, clashing with the fire element
  • Swimming pool or water bodies in Southwest of the house

Small Adjustments, Big Shifts

The good news is, not every imbalance requires tearing down walls or redesigning entire rooms. Many times, energy can be realigned with thoughtful, subtle changes such as:

  • Elemental remedies like introducing mirrors, plants, or metals in the right corners
  • Directional corrections such as shifting the position of a bed or desk
  • Symbolic balancing through natural light, specific colors, and textures that support weaker zones

A Real Story from My Work

A business client running his bespoke interior design workshop approached me with issues related to his business growth. During my site visit, the first thing that caught my attention was the anti-clock wise flow of operations —from receiving raw materials to cutting, designing, painting, and finishing. It made me think: while we often forget, the Earth itself spins clockwise. To stay in harmony with these universal energies, it’s better for operations to follow a clockwise flow. When I suggested this simple change to the client, and it was easy to implement, they noticed a positive difference within just a few days.

The Bigger Picture

If your home or office feels out of sync, don’t be disheartened. With the right reworks, even the most modern, architect-driven spaces can regain their harmony and start supporting your well-being again.
